During the Vietnam War, 1LT Russell Steindam commanded a platoon conducting nighttime reconnaissance missions, when they encountered an enemy stronghold. During the fire fight, a grenade was tossed into the area around his position. Without hesitation, he threw himself on the grenade to save the lives of his men. First Lieutenant Steindam was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, two Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart.
